What is the relationship between a gene, a DNA molecule and a protein? What is the relationship between a gene, a DNA molecule and a protein?
Apologies, but the 1st post is wrong. Protein does NOT make up DNA.
DNA is made of nucleic acids. It is the code for the body. A set of DNA which is used for a particular purpose is called a gene. Picture the DNA like a book. Each chapter is a separate gene.
When a gene is read by a ribosome, it tells the ribosome to make a protein. This is how stuff gets done in the body.
In short: Nucleic acids make up DNA, DNA makes up genes, genes contain instructions for ribosomes to make proteins. What is the relationship between a gene, a DNA molecule and a protein?
A gene is a code for making proteins (either structural or enzyme)
A chromosome is a DNA molecule, and a gene is a short length of a chromosome
BUT, if you are doing this for GCSE, exam papers seem to accept that a gene is a DNA molecule
So, really, it depends on what stage you are at - I don't know why, but i learnt the first bit about the DNA molecule, but I've done past papers where the answer has been a gene is a DNA molecule.
Gosh, those exam boards :D
good luck and i hope this helps
:)What is the relationship between a gene, a DNA molecule and a protein?
protein make up DNA, DNA make up genes.
